Thodaya Mangalam is a combination of invocation verses, sung in praise of the village deity of Vazhuvoor, Lord Gyana Sabesa, for an auspicious beginning to the performance.

This song praises Lord Lakshmi Narasimha, the part-lion and part-man incarnation of Lord Vishnu, extolls his many virtues and requests the presence of his helping hands.

Alarippu means a blossoming bud, and is a short rhythmic dance composition progressing from subtle eye movements to complicated fast-paced footwork.

The Jathiswaram is a pure dance number, featuring intricate footwork set to complex patterns (or jathis) woven together with a lilting melody of “swaras” or musical notes.

Meera speaks to her sakhi and says, “My eyes are struck with His bana, the arrows of His loving glance and the enchanting music from his flute is etched in my heart. Oh Sakhi bring Him to me, I long to see that Kanhaiya.”

Today’s Varnam, Angayarkanni, is a very famous composition of the violin maestro Lalgudi G. Jayaraman. This Varnam speaks of the navarasa or nine states of mind of Goddess Parvati.
